Direct Response Marketing Industry Legend Billy Mays Dies at 50

This morning, infomercial pitchman Billy Mays of OxiClean and Orange Glo fame passed away at the young age of 50.

Mays was best known for his short-form (2-minute) infomercials where he yelled in his pitches to get his point across. He was the spokesperson for a variety of products. He was discovered by his wife Deborah this morning in his Florida home. Recently, he co-starred in the popular Discovery Channel show “Pitchmen” along with Anthony Sullivan. They specialized in direct response marketing.

Mays was on board a US Airways flight that blew out its front tires as it landed at a Tampa airport on Saturday.

 

He complained that some luggage hit him on the head during the incident on the plane.

“I’m not worry about it. I’ve got a hard head,” stated Mays.

US Airways spokesman Jim Olson said that none of the 138 passengers and five crew members were injured in the incident, but several passengers reported having bumps and bruises, according to the station. Authorities have not said whether Mays’ death was related to the incident. Mays leaves behind a wife and two kids. His son Billy Mays Jr appeared several time on Pitchmen and is an integral part of the show. It has been a very unsettling week with the recently passing of Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson and now Billy Mays. Make sure you tell someone you love and appreciate them.
